Messel on Tour

(English version at the end of article)

Tropické podnebí paleocénu a eocénu jim poskytlo výjimečnou možnost diverzifikace a naleziště v Messelu tentokráte nehraje hlavní roli při hledání nejúžasnějších hadích objevů.

Messel odkryl několik fosílií dávných škrtičů řazených do čeledi Boidae, kteří už v eocénu byli hodně podobní dnešním druhům. Díky termoreceptorům mohli škrtiči lovit s naprostou přesností i v noci a právě někdy v eocénu pravděpodobně došlo k začátku koevoluce hadů s jejich dnešní hlavní kořistí -hlodavci.

Srovnání páteře a žeber u fosilního a recentního zástupce čeledi Boidae.
Obě skupiny mají nízko posazenou spodní čelist s koronoidem a zbytky pánve v oblasti, kde předtím zřejmě měli funkční zadní končetiny. U recentních zástupců Boidae najdeme také funkční levou plíci (u většiny hadů úplně zakrnělá). Zůstávající podčeledi svým recentním rozšířením nutí k zamyšlení nad hypotézou vikariance a disperze v rámci Gondwany.

Geografická distribuce čeledi Boidae :NT (Neotropická oblast) - Boa, Corallus, Epicrates, Eunectes, A (Africká oblast) -Calabaria, Sanzinia, Acrantophis, PI (Pacifická oblast) - Candoia, N (Neoarktická oblast) -Lichanura, Charina, C (Střední Amerika) -Exiliboa, Ungaliophis, A/I (Afro-Indická oblast) -Eryx
Molekulární data podporují výše znázorněné rozdělení zástupců Boidae. Zástupci Pythonidae zahrnuti do analýzy tvoří sesterskou skupinu ke Loxocemidae. Rod Loxocemus z Mexika je sesterským taxonem dnes výhradně starosvětských Pythonidae, což signalizuje americkou výměnu hadí fauny a výskyt krajt v Jižní Americe navzdory chybějícímu fosilnímu materiálu.

Nalezený prekloakální obratel má unikátní tvar písmene T a extrémně redukovány subcentrální a laterální foramina.

Ekosystém tehdejší části Kolumbie byl zaplaveným pralesem plným močálů a ríčních systémů, kde mohl obrovitý had bez problémů snést svou ohromnou váhu. V Messelu před 47 miliony let nacházíme dvoumetrového škrtiče Palaeopython, který obýval zřejmě koruny stromů a lovil tehdy už neuvěřitelně početné ptáky a savce.

The golden age of snakes after the extinction of the dinosaurs

Snakes have originated as a group in the early Cretaceous (the oldest fossil is about 120 million years old), but their diversitystarted to rise after the end of the dinosaur era. The tropical climate of Paleocene and Eocene gave them a unique opportunity to diversify and Messel site does not play a major role in findings of the most exciting snakes this time. We will meet with snakes living in a volcanic crater 47 million years ago, but also with the giant Titanoboa cerrejonensis species, which was found in Colombia.

Messel revealed several ancient species assigned to family Boidae, which have been already in the Eocene period very similar to extant boid snakes. The most famous specimen is the perfectly preserved Palaeopython fischeri, from the others for example the gender Messelophis. When exactly could the ecological niches of snakes as we know them today arise? Fascinating findings from Colombia about 60 million years old are proof that snakes were already the perfect predators -stranglers, just several million years after dinosaurs became extinct. Before, during the Mesozoic, snakes were gradually evolving for the new style of life and there are two hypotheses about their ancestors. One of them considers them as descendants of lizards, which were prone to digging and drilling in the soil, while there was a gradual reduction of the limbs. The second is based on morphological similarities with mosasaurs, which lived exclusively in the sea and became extinct 65 million years ago along with dinosaurs. Neither of these hypotheses is yet sufficiently proven. Species from Messel are already adapted for strangling their prey and have a highly developed kinetic skull (squamosum and quadratum strongly extended, seams of dentale and maxilla free) and a powerful body with long ribs capable of providing support to massive muscle musculus costocutaneus. They were hunters of mammals and birds living in the trees and on maxilla on the largest of specimens of Palaeopython fischeri I even noticed holes, which probably already carried thermoreceptors able to perceive just minimal thermal changes in the environment caused by the presence of warm-blooded prey. Thanks to thermoreceptors snakes could hunt with pinpoint accuracy even at night and it was probably sometime in the Eocene when the beginning of coevolution of these predators with their current principal prey -rodents, started. Messel fossils include the early types of the order Rodentia and these animals along with many insectivores were probably the main item on the menu of many snake species.

Skull of Palaeopython fischeri shows the same adaptations for snake life style as we can find in extant representatives of Boidae

The comparison of vertebral column and ribs in extinct and recent representative of Boidae. They are separated by 47 million years of evolution, but despite of that they are pretty similar. Snake adaptations right after their massive diversification were so successfull, that they didn't change a lot since that time.
In snakes we observe the high levels of homoplasy among morphological characters, so it is hardly surprising that the traditional division of the familiy Boidae to subfamilies Boinae, Pythoninae and Erycinae is now changed and we recognise the independent Pythonidae family. Snakes from familiy Boidae don't have teeth on praemaxilla and postfrontals like Pythonidae, instead of laying eggs they give birth. Both groups have low-set lower jaw with coronoid and artefacts of pelvis in an area where they had a functional rear limbs before. In recent boid snakes we also find the functional left lung (in most snakes it is completely vestigial). Remaining subfamilies with their range provoke tosuggest a hypothesis of vicariance and dispersion within Gondwana. In genera Sanzinia and Acrantophis from Madagascar it is a vicariance, while in others like Boa, Corallus, Epicrates or Candoia it is rather the oceanic dispersion. Findings from Messel were classified to be in the Boidae family, which also applies to Palaeopython despite its name.

Geographical distribution of Boidae :NT (Neotropics) - Boa, Corallus, Epicrates, Eunectes, A (Afrotropics) -Calabaria, Sanzinia, Acrantophis, PI (Pacific area) - Candoia, N (Neoarctics) -Lichanura, Charina, C (Central America) -Exiliboa, Ungaliophis, A/I (Afro-Indian area) -Eryx
Molecular data support the distribution of representatives of Boidae shown above. Representatives of Pythonidae were included in the analysis as the sister group to Loxocemidae. Estimated divergence between Boidae and Pythonidae took place somewhere in the Early Cretaceous, but the emergence of recent clades happened about 40 million years later in the Late Cretaceous. Rod Loxocemus from Mexico is a sister taxon to Pythonidae (nowadays exclusively from Old World), signalizing that an exchange in American snake fauna probably happened and the presence of pythons in South America could be real despite the missing fossil material. They could get to the other side of the planet through the other continents of Gondwana (Antarctica and Australia) at the end of the Cretaceous , and then they spread because of the movement of continents to Asia. However, pythons have left no fossils in Gondwana and their similarity with Boidae can also be simply the result of convergence. But molecular studies show their relationship with Loxomicedae from Mexico and refute this possibility.

Bayesian analysis of Boidae and related taxons tends to show, that after the breaking of Gondwana the dispersal of species happened and that boids and pythons have the common ancestor and their similarity is not just a convergence. Estimated times for divergences are on the scheme below.
The dispersion of Malagasy boas happened already in the Late Cretaceous (Calabaria lives on the mainland), but the two genera were not diversified until the Oligocene. The group from North and Central America was separated from the other one living on the south continents of Gondwana (South America, Antarctica, India) until 74 million years ago, then there was a temporary connection and exchange of American fauna. India could be temporarily connected to Antarctica by Kerguelen platform. Pacific group of boas is still a mystery, it could arise in dispersion from India, South America or vicariance in land mass of South America / Australia /Antarctica. Genus Eryx diversified sometimes before 47 million years, and its motherland, the Indian subcontinent, collided with Eurasia at latest 42 million years ago. Boidae are definitely a group primarily associated with the disintegration of Gondwana, but Eocene findings from Europe show that they also spread to the northern hemisphere. It is quite likely that at that time some separated populations survived on the islands (one of them was also home to the Messel locality), but on the mainland they were already extinct.

South American group of Boidae (includes also this Corallus hortulanus) was separated for the long time of its evolution such as the other groups on the other continents.
The diversification of other snake groups happened also during the short geological period. For example, the Elapoidea have diversified already in the Eocene. It originated in Africa with  taxa other than Elapidae, which originated in the Oligocene. It is a very early find of a group for which is the poison apparatus an important part of their arsenal. Some primitive forms have thus lived in Eocene greenhouse world. But the discovery, which makes snakes one of the most interesting vertebrate groups in recent years was not made in Europe on the worlds best-known deposits, such as the Messel pit. The attention is now attached to a Colombian coal mine Cerrejón, where the remains of the largest known snake in history of our planet were found. It is hard to imagine its monstrous size, which made it the top predator in South America and apparently the biggest on Earth at that time. The period just after the extinction of dinosaurs (Paleocene, early Eocene) was previously known for giant birds of prey reaching their peak of dominance (Gastornis). But even more threatening were the reptiles of Cerrejón -it was also home to huge crocodiles with length up to 10 meters and for turtles with shells up to two meters wide. After the finding of a giant snake vertebrae and comparison with recent representatives, it was clear that Titanoboa cerrejonensis was a close relative to recent boas. It turns out that snakes diversified to more forms in this period that was previously anticipated. Like mammals and birds, they have achieved a great diversity and extant groups of boas and pythons, but also some poisonous snakes have already evolved.

The tropical world of Cerrajón 13 million years older that the Messel pit
Titanoboa with a length of over 14 meters and weighing around one ton needed the sufficiently high temperatures for its activity as an poikilotherm (minimum 34 Celsius degrees) and these temperatures were really real. The atmosphere was saturated with carbon dioxide and the world was literally covered with tropical rainforest. If Messel shows a very warm forest rich in life, Cerrejón was a hot bath full of the first pioneers of the evolution with size reaching their peak after the catastrophic events taking place 5 million years before. The found precloacal vertebra is uniquely T-shaped and has extremely reduced subcentral and lateral foramina. Unique features of the family Boidae found also in the Colombian giant were the paracotylar foramina, posteromedially bent interzygapophysal edges and the two-angled edge of neural arch. The construction of vertebrae is closest to the vertebrae of recent Boa constrictor and Titanoboa was therefore included in the Boidae family. The position of the  found vertebrae is in the middle of the vertebral column, about 60% of the length after the atlas (geometric morphometric spine model based on extant species of Pythonidae and Boidae). Without a correct estimate of the position of the vertebrae any measuring could lead to miscalculation of the total length. Also the three fragments of the skull were found the location, which is a tremendously rare event because of the fragility of the snake bones on the head. It can be perfectly compared to parts of the skull of recent Boa constrictor.

The size range in the main clades of Serpentes. Including Titanoboa  increased the scale in Boidae of the dark red line.
Estimation of temperature gradient in Paleocene suitable for Titanoboa  with example of recent anaconda Eunectes murinus.
The ecosystem of Paleocene Colombia was the flooded forest full of swamps and river systems, where a giant snake could easily bear its immense weight. It probably lived aquatic life very similar to recent anacondas. As the Earth's climate cooled, forests have disappeared and the temperature decreased. The Messel pit 47 million years ago was home to Palaeopython -2 meters long strangler, which probably lived in the treetops and feasted on incredibly numerous birds and mammals. Also the smaller species of the genus, as Messelophis, are a typical equivalent to recent boa species. Because of their amazing resemblance to extant Boidae we see the snakes from Messel as the species with a high level of specialization. Finding older by 13 million years just confirms the hypothesis that we already see here the basically evolved snake lineage of recent times. Snakes went through amazing changes in their evolution. Many questions still remain unanswered and are a challenge for the future zoologists.

Messel on Tour

(English version at the end of article)

Lebka svým celkovým tvarem připomíná druh Magharita stevensi (svrchní eocén Severní Ameriky), který patří do vyhynulé čeledi Notharctidae a podčeledi Cercamoniinae.

Na místě druhého premoláru vidíme pouze jediný zub z celé generace v dolní i horní čelisti a spodní druhý premolár vypadl pravděpodobně v raném věku. Všechny dočasné zuby mají dlouhé kořeny a všechny tři trvalé moláry jsou přítomny. U molárů se setkáváme s rozdílnou morfologií a velikostí než u rodů Europolemur a Periconodon, což byli současníci mladého exempláře Darwinius masillae.

U Eulemur mongoz, Varecia variegata, Avahi laniger, Loris sp., Callithrix jacchus a Cercopithecus neglectus takovéto kaudální prodloužení chybí. Tyhle proporce najdeme u Varecia variegata, Callithrix jacchus a Cercopithecus neglectus, zatímco předloktí u  Eulemur mongoz, Notharctus osborni, Avahi laniger a zejména Godinotia neglecta z Geiseltalu je mnohem delší.

Uspořádání karpálií u Darwinius odpovídá tomu u Europolemur a Notharctus (os lunatum artikuluje proximálně s radiem a ulnou, mediálně s os scaphoideum a distálně s os centrale).

Darwinius masillae -the missing link?

Fossil discovered in 1983 in Messel fell into the hands of science just in December 2006 when the Norwegian palaeontologist Jørn Hurum met with a fossil dealer, from who he had already bought some findings on the fossil and mineral market in Hamburg. After first seeing the specimen it was clear that this is unique in the world and even by the standards of Messel, which until then had not revealed any completely preserved primate. Thanks to his initiative to get this rare specimen it travelled to the Natural History Museum in Oslo. There is a second part of the fossil, which was purchased to a private museum in Wyoming, but that is far from complete and has been changed in order to look more genuine. After a detailed study of a young female named Ida Hurum's team assembled to the media in 2009 that this represents the missing link between prosimians and anthropoid lineage. Huge publicity and attention to 47 million years old finding was definitely worth of it, not because of a shocking conclusion about the position in the evolutionary tree of primates, but because of hot discussion which started. If we're still not sure about something, it is the ancient origin of order Primates, which is so important for us.

Comparison of original and complete specimen A found for science in 2006 and incomplete specimen B with regions of correction for making it like completely preserved (just the part 1 and 2 are geniune).

First presentation in media : Eighth wonder of the world!

After exploring the newly discovered primate skeleton the team of experts (Jens Franzen L., Philip D. Gingerich, Joerg Habersetzer et.al.) concluded that this is a truly extraordinary material that will stand as a lighthouse in the evolutionary tree of primates. This also corresponded with a massive publicity in the media headlines, which has presented it as the most important fossil for 47 million years. What was so revolutionary on it? Let me move to the original version of the study.Skull in its overall shape resembles that of Magharita stevensi (Late Eocene of North America), which belongs to extinct family Notharctidae and subfamily Cercamoniinae. These were the adapids (Adapiformes), the primate with basal body structure similar to lemurs in most cases, which lived from the Eocene almost on the entire northern hemisphere. Short rostrum, relatively short lower jaw and robust skull base are are nearly identical in these two species. Likewise, maxilla has seams with premaxilla and caudally with nasale. The orbits are relatively large, which may be an important feature for nocturnal way of life. Adapids Adapis magnus, Adapis parisiensis and Notharctus osbornianus are having proportionally smaller orbits and are therefore regarded as diurnal primates. Postorbital bar is made up of frontal and jugal (processus jugalis, processus frontalis), which is typical for the line leading to prosimians (Strepsirrhini). The anthropoid line (Haplorrhini) have the orbit completely surrounded by bones and that's why you can't seethe back parts of the skull when looking from the front. Unlike larger adapid skulls, zygomatic arches are slender and low situated in Darwinius masillae and sagittalis crista is not developed (also not in Magharita stevensi and Europolemur kelleri, which are the representatives of Cercamoniinae). The construction of the bony ear is very similar to the relatively recently extinct lemur Megaladapis edwardsi from Madagascar. Porus acusticus is not surrounded by meatus acusticus externus and the auditory canal is formed by os petrosum posterolaterally and not with the os ectotympanicum (different to anthropoid lineage).

The skull showed from the lateral view by the computed tomography method
Dentition with the presence of milk teeth shows that Ida was a young individual. We can see crowns of milk teeth with long roots, emerging mineralized permanent molars with incomplete roots and also mineralized crowns of teeth from the incisors to premolars. The second milk teeth remain in the mandible, we can not positively identify all the upper incisors. It is obvious that the upper and lower milk canines are in their place. All four third and fourth premolars are in occlusion. In place of the second premolar tooth there is only one of a whole generation in the lower and upper jaw and lower second premolar probably dropped out at an early age. All the temporary teeth have long roots and all three permanent molars are present. The molars have different morphology and size than in Europolemur and Periconodon, which were the contemporaries of the young specimen of Darwinius masillae.

Detailed view of the dentition of Darwinius masillae. Milk incisor dI2 has not dropped out yet and dC1/dC1, dP3/dP3, dP4/dP4 are still functional. Permanent teeth, which have already erupted are I1/I1, P2/P2, and M1/M1 (P2 is on the plate B).  Erupting teeth are I2/I2 a M2/M2. Crowns of molars M3/M3 are complete, but the roots are mixing. The crowns of canine C1 is complete, but in C1 it it much less mineralised.
The ribs are not well preserved on this extraordinary fossil (cartilaginous parts only as hints), and almost the entire sternum is covered by right humerus. Vertebral column includes 7 cervical, 11 thoracic, 7 lumbar, 3 sacral and 31 caudal vertebrae. The tail was compared with two representatives of the Eocene adapids and recent representatives of Ceboidea and Lemuroidea. It is much longer than in Europolemur koenigswaldi. Length of caudal vertebrae Ca8-Ca20 is much larger in comparison with a recent Eulemur mongoz and Avahi laniger and significantly also with Ateles geoffroyi (Ceboidea). It is obvious that Darwinius did not have prehensile tail. It was probably used primarily for balance, and possibly for coordination of movement when jumping. Its soft contours of the body are incomplete, so it is not possible to decide whether it was covered with thick hair or not.

The shoulder girdle was possible to study primarily through right scapula, the left one protrudes only slightly above the vertebral column. Margo costalis is extended caudally to the vertebral column, but it is not very significant. However, the authors found it in the specimen. Such caudal extension is missing in Eulemur mongoz, Varecia variegata, Avahi lanigera, Loris sp., Callithrix jacchus and Cercopithecus neglectus. Another well visible bone of forelimb is the right humerus. Epiphysal proximal suture is still present, although we can not say anything about it because it is completely covered with siderite. Here and elsewhere in the skeleton siderite consists of thickening around the decomposition areas of cartilage. Crista brachiolateralis is visible and extends distally, as seen typically in prosimians. Mediocaudally at the point where the left humerus is close to trochlea, is the foramen entepicondyloideum. It is well developed in many mammals, such as in primitive apes or New world monkeys (Platyrrhini). Ulna and radius are completely separated, which is typical of primates. Forearms are unusually short, almost the same length as the humerus. These proportions are found in Varecia variegata, Callithrix jacchus and Cercopithecus neglectus, while the forearm of Eulemur mongoz, Notharctus osborni, Avahi laniger and especially Godinotia neglecta from Geiseltal is much longer. Processus olecrani is short, but high in comparison with the genus Lemur.

The object of particular interest was the distal portion of the right ulna and radius, which were secondarily fused, apparently due to a traumatic event. Protuberance is formed by bone and varies in color and texture from the surrounding yellow siderite and fragments of other bones. The animal must have suffered a fracture at the distal end of the right forearm and cartilaginous callus caused the fusal of carpals. Only os hamatum and its articular facet for metacarpal V and a small part of the os capitatum are visible. Arrangement for carpals of Darwinius corresponds with the Europolemur and Notharctus (os lunatum articulates proximally with the ulna and radius, medially with the os scaphoideum and distally with os centrale). For Adapis it is typical that there is no contact between the os lunatum and os centrale. The lengths of the basal and middle phalangs II-V are amazing and tehy resemble recent genus Lemur, while metacarpals are much shorter. Darwinius with Notharctus and Europolemur, but not with Adapis, has the front legs similar to recent galagos. Functional significance of mesaxonic front and hind limbs of primates, which Darwinius shared with anthropoid primate line, is yet not clear according to the authors.

Detailed view to front limbs of Darwinius masillae. Extremely interesting is the cartilaginous callus on the right carpus, which was consequence of a bad injury and must have been a big handicap while moving.
The pelvic girdle is quite similar to extant prosimians (significant is a narrow wing of os ilium expanding craniocaudally). Tuber ischiadicum is much less significant in comparison to genus Lemur. Os pubis and ischium are not fused, which is further evidence that Ida was a young individual. The neck of femur is very short and the trochanter major is very low as in  Notharctus osborni, but higher than in Eulemur mongoz, Varecia variegata, and particularly Avahi lanigera and Cercopithecus neglectus. All seams are still unfused. The left leg is missing, except the short proximal fragment above the knee joint. Most of the lower left is retained on the plate B, although its distal end and the foot is also missing. Tarsus is uncovered in laterocranial position, processus coracoideus is situated dorsally from the back of the calcaneum as in Lemur and Europolemur kelleri. It is significantly different from the representatives of Omomyidae (basal Haplorrhini) and even more from the genus Tarsius (tarsiers), where is the part of the bone extremely elongated distally from the processus coracoideus, while in apes it is much shorter. It seems that it is a plesiomorphic feature in prosimians. Aside from its smaller size, the tarsus of Darwinius resembles that of Adapis parisiensis. Talofibular facet is steep and trochlea peronealis is relatively small and holds a sharp angle. Unlike the situation in adapids and Lemuriformes, the ankle of  Darwinius resembles rather anthropoid lineage than prosimians. Steep talofibular facet itself is a synapomorphy of anthropoid primate lineage, because it also occurs in treeshrews (Scandentia), colugos (Dermoptera) and Plesiadapiformes. Among primates, it is an apomorphy of Haplorrhini and its presence in Darwinius masillae supports according to authors the taxonomic and phylogenetic classification to this lineage rather than to Strepsirrhini. The fingers have apparently no claws, but nails. The second finger has the toilet-claw in Strepsirrhini, but it was not found here. Thumb in opposition to other fingers surely resembles the anthropoid lineage.

View on the hind limb and ankle. The absence of toilet-claw and thumb in oposition is very apparent. Here we can't find a big difference from Eulemur mongoz, however the position of talofibular facet is significantly different.
The fossil tells its story after further detailed examination. No sign of damage caused by other animals, a position in complete tranquility. This animal should have fallen into the water of lake surrounded by tropical forest and drown. The line around the body indicates the original coat conture, small size of ears and robust muscles on stylopodium. In addition, we can find out what sex was this 47 million years old primate. In male individuals of species of Cercamoniinae the penis bone (bacculum) is commonly found (also in Europolemur kelleri from Messel). Here it is obviously missing, so Ida was a young female with milk teeth in the jaw, unfused epiphyses of her bones and injured front leg. Finding of the first and second permanent molars in the lower jaw indicate that she was something like adolescent heading to adulthood, but she didn't survive till she could reach it. Study of digestive tract from the plate B revealed as food the fruits and leaves, while insects ere entirely missing. This very fact points to the anthropoid primate lineage and the question is, whether it is really a clear signal to the hypothesis that Darwinius could be the basal ancestor of the human race.

Darwinius is a very strange fossil, but the expectations were exaggerated (no direct ancestor of the human race)

Amazing fossil attracted a deserved attention primarily to adapids, a group with uncertain relationships to Strepsirrhini and Haplorrhini. The idea that Darwinius masillae was one of the adapids leading to extant monkeys have rapidly spread around the world like a bombshell of an incredible finding. Despite the whole popularisation it should be noted that the authors of the original study did not claim that this fossil is the great ancestor of human race. This unfortunately can not be told you about the further information in media about this finding.

The question about the importance of Darwinius masillae for the evolution of primates has become one of the most discussed topics in zoological society and yet the consenzus was not been made.
Adapids appear in the fossil record in the Eocene about 55 million years ago. They are traditionally considered as the basal group of Strepsirrhini, but after this finding and publication of a new study their position suddenly started to be shaky. But not for a long time. The opponents of the theory of the anthropoid ancestor lineage linked to Darwinius emerged quickly. Studies comparing genus Afradapis from adapids living 37 million years ago in Africa indicated that similar characters to monkeys appeared through the convergence among prosimians in their evolution (E. Seiffert, 2009). The joint between two jaw bones is fused in Afradapis and the main cusp of the upper molars (hypocone) is very large. Basal anthropoids lacked these characters and convergence is therefore proved to be an explanation. Adapiformes could even be the sister taxon to Strepsirrhini according to the author. Most of the characters thought to show a clear connection with the evolution of higher primates began to appear as poorly interpreted or deformated because of the great pressure of the sediment on the tiny skeleton (toilet-claw or tooth comb, construction of limbs).

The team of authors (B. Williams et. al., 2010) published a year after the publication of sensational report of fossil of Darwinius masillae the critical study about the claims that this specimen plays the huge role in the anthropoid primate lineage evolution. The initial phylogenetic analysis was based on 6 synapomorphies, 3 of which were shared between the anthropoid lineage, tarsiers and our fossil representative (skull with short rostrum, deep ramus mandibulare and steep talofibular facet). Three others were presented as the exclusive synapomorphy of Darwinius masillae with the anthropoid lineage -fused mandibular symphysis, the loss of toilet-claw on the second finger of the hind limbs and shovel-shaped incisors. The number of characters is very low and in addition they are all the synapomorphies of Haplorrhini. What specifically can we say to them? Short rostrum can be found also in other adapids like Smilodectes. Darwinius has the postorbital bar  laterally to the orbit, but bone separation of whole orbit as an important synapomorphy for Haplorrhini is missing. We do not find here, just to be complete, an important diagnostic features such as position of the internal carotid on the tympanic bulla and the structure of itself  doesn't look anthropoid. Bulla tympanica is formed in primates by one major bone -os petrosum. Os ectotympanicum, which supports the bulla, is in adapids, lemurs and omomyids inside the recess, in lorises and Platyrrhini it connects to the edge of the bulla and eventually in tarsiers, Catarrhini and hominids it has a tube shape protruding out from the bulla tympanica. Mandibular symphysis is attached ventrally but not dorsally, so here  it is also a very uncertain interpretation despite the fact that Ida was a youngster. Moreover, this character has evolved independently in some adapids, lemurs or in athropoid lineage so apparently it is not correct to make any conclusions from it. Dentition of Darwinius with shovel-shaped incisors is not uncommon, similar shape occurs in adapids or plesiadapids and the construction of molars is different from the anthropoid lineage (mandibular without paracone and maxillar with hypocone, which is missing in the fossil anthropoid representatives). Construction of the ankle (steep talofibular facet) was also questioned due to possible distortion and also a similar structure can be considered as a primitive character, which remained at Haplorrhini (it is found for example in plesiadapids). Toilet-claw (on second finger) could evolve independently in multiple lineages, tarsiers have another one on the third finger, but some fossil representatives of adapids didn't have it (Europolemur koenigswaldi). It should be noted here, that the nails on the fingers of the hind limbs are something special, and certainly not considered as a primitive character among primates. Together with the construction of the ankle, the existence of nails on the fingers may be the one of those structures that are quite exceptional for this fossil, and maybe this is not the sheer convergence with Haplorrhini. Overally, the phylogenetic analysis of Darwinius masillae is really burdened with homoplasy and does not give a comprehensive view of the contemporary species of adapids, omomyids or already recognized representatives of the anthropoid lineage from the Late Eocene. The idea of such Haplorrhini ancestor among adapids is quite bold and would need much more evidence.

Is there enough evidence to claim that Darwinius masillae is the part of the anthropoid lineage of primates? According to our data, it is not the right way.
The adapid position in Strepsirrhini is much more provided by the evidence and Darwinius was almost surely the adapid primate.

How have the authors responded to criticism focused on their work? In particular, they rejected the idea that the skeleton is somehow damaged and some characters are therefore difficult to interpret (with what I would certainly agree). Ida is incredibly well preserved fossil and in case of ankle and its important bone (astragalus) we find no distortions, but a natural position. But I can not agree with their defense of cladistic analysis based on only a few (according to them on important and representative) characters. Comparison of a fossil representative only with recent species on the basis of a few (less than 10!) characteristics really smells from weirdness. The basic idea is very interesting and perhaps we will find the answer in the future. But claiming that this small primate from Messel is the ancestor of anthropoid lineage is at least very bold. Rather it is an adapid with surprising convergent characters with Haplorrhini. After all, only the idea that some adapids could play a role in the evolution of primate lineage leading also to us, people, could remain alive.

Clear signal that this is a true anthropoid ancestor? No, this is not enough.
3D animation of the skeleton should show all the main features linking Ida with anthropoid lineage, but we rather see those showing the relationship with prosimians.
The huge media coverage around this exceptional finding aimed to attract as much attention as it can and simply make a hole in the world. It certainly succeeded, but clear evidence of our first ancestor was not found. Small primate 47 million years old was named in honor of Charles Darwin and he would certainly be pleased if he could see the discovery with his own eyes. You can see here the signs of natural selection, adaptations to the environment and also evidence of the very struggle for survival. But Darwinius has not completed a passionate debate about our own first ancestor, it caused the opposite. It is not the missing link but the proof of the complex mechanisms of evolution, which does not go through such stages. Adapids are still considered as the members of the prosimians, but the presence of certain characters in Ida is a promise for the future, because at least some of them just might be the ones who made the difference. Just the idea that in ancient Eocene monkeys and prosimians developed some characters independently, have lost them or possessed again, is very interesting. If Darwinius masillae is a member of prosimians and has nothing to do with the anthropoid lineage, what was the real first ancestor, ancestor of human race?
