Messel on Tour

(English version at the end of article)

Kostlíni -starobylí a dokonalí predátoři

Dva recentní rody kostlínů (Atractosteus a Lepisosteus) obývají v počtu 7 druhů Severní a Střední Ameriku. Nejstarší fosilní nálezy sahají do začátku křídy (před 120 miliony let) a už obsahují výše zmíněné znaky.

Větší druhy s mohutnějšími čelistmi (Atractosteus spatula) disponují největší rychlostí a sílou hlavně díky kontrakci svalů a jejich úhlu vůči kostem. Podobné příklady „vývoje zpět“ známe například u krunýře želv a dochází k nim při opakované ztrátě a obnovení stejných selekčních tlaků prostředí.

Gars -ancient and perfect predators

Messel provided detailed view of gars 47 million years old and showed how perfect was their body structure already in the Eocene. These living fossils are abundant here, youngsters and also adults were found. Unlike the case of Eurotamandua, here we find the opposite evolutionary story -vertebrates so well adapted to their enviroment, that in their next evolution no significant functional change occured.

Gars (Ginglymodi, Lepisosteiformes) are one of the 4 ancient lineages of ray-finned fishes (Actinopterygii). The others are bichirs (Cladistia), bowfins (Halecostomi) and cartilaginous fishes (Chondrostei). Two recent genera of gars (Lepisosteus and Atractosteus) inhabit in seven species North America and Central America. Their anatomy has a variety of specific features such as elongated ethmoidale region, tongue supported by dermal plates of basihyale and teeth with plicidentin (which is a derived character within the Actinopterygii), but many others put them on the basal positions in phylogeny. Scales have a layer of ganoin, which is in fact enamel formed from ectoderm (dentin is missing). There are ganoin scales with roof-shape on fins (fulcrae). They have a large number of dermal bones on skull (especially between orbit and operculum), jaw joint anteriorly from orbit, each vertebral body has joint for connection with another one and also the spiral valve in the intestine. Neurocranium and upper jaw are connected directly, but there is also connection between quadratum and hyomandibulare, what makes the skull of gars amphystilic. Their direct position in phylogeny is, however, still inclear. They have been proposed as a sister group of Halecostomi (osteological characters), or, for example Chondrostei (molecular data). The oldest fossil record goes back to the early Cretaceous (120 million years ago) and already contains the features mentioned above. When we include also the extinct Neopterygii representatives, gars form a monofylum together with Semionotiformes and Macrosemiiformes (extinct) or they are a sister group to whole Neopterygii. According to these data the history of gars must be at least as long as the history of related groups. Semionotiformes and Macrosemiiformes originated in the Triassic, which means that we have from 80 to 130 million years long missing period in gar evolution.

Ganoin scales in Atractosteus strausi
Evolution of Semionotiformes in Mezozoicum passed through several sections of the adaptation for fresh and brackish water. Lepisosteidae must be a returnees to piscivory, because all other forms in fresh water occupied the niche of recent Cypriniformes, which were not present at that time. A fascinating evidence of this different evolution may be the Messel location representative -Masillosteus kelleri. It may be a species that represents the crossroad between herbivore and predator and its phylogeny is not yet entirely certain. Freshwater fishes are good indicators of paleobiogeographical relations and extinct gars from North America, Asia and Europe are likely to be an evidence for cutting of of these continents from Pangea (Laurasia).

Masillosteus kelleri

Just recently (XU Guanghua, 2011) was found the oldest known representative of Ginglymodi from the middle Triassic of the Chinese province Yunnan. Its name is Kyphosichthys grandei and narrow and deep body is characterized mainly by a significant hump between the head and dorsal fin. Depth of the body is the biggest posteriorly of the edge of operculum. Paired nostrils are small and lie deep in the nasal process of praemaxilla, as well as in other representatives of Ginglymodi. Frontale is significantly elongated and is three times longer than parietale. There are 7 infraorbitals, but no supraorbitals were found. Pterygoids are poorly recognizable as a result of the preservation of the material. Presence of supramaxilla was previously considered to be a synapomorphy with bowfins, but it is also found in Semionotiformes and Osteoglossiformes, so today we consider it as a synapomorfphy with Neopterygii. Derived characters shared with the gars are lacrinale anteriorly from the orbital ring, three or more lacrinal bones, absence of gular bone, due to poor material preservation in particular location it is not possible to tell about the reduction of clavicles or reduction of posttemporal fossa. The precise phylogenetic position of Kyphosichthys is still unclear, but the authors suggested polytomy together with  Semionotus and Lepisosteus. It may therefore also be a basal representative of one of these two lineages, in any case in this study authors tend to classify it to the Ginglymodi. This species is an example of convergent evolution, because a similar body structure has also Felberia (basal Neopterygii) and Dapedium (basal Teleostei), it is the only known representative of such body plan in gars. Pectoral fin position is higher than in other species of Ginglymodi, which apparently was a great advantage in maneuvering into side directions, important for different body shape. On the other hand, Kyphosichthys was not a fast swimmer, because the study of morphologically similar species showed the same results -good maneuvering, but low speed. In the Middle Triassic the diversification of gars and related species was on the way, which has been demonstrated by this finding. This is species significantly different from those that have survived to recent times. So somewhere here the evolution of gars started -in forms with slow swimming and without any presence of features common for top predators.

Evolution of Actinopterygii (Hurley et. al., 2006). Time of divergence between Neopterygii and Teleostei differs a lot in case of mitochondrial DNA and fossils. In Neopterygii we can find a congruence contrary to Teleostei in mtDNA (black), nuclear DNA (red) and fossils (blue). Position of gars is here as a sister group of Semionotiformes. doi:10.1098/rspb.2006.3749
A similar example as Kyphosichthys grandei, is probably the finding from Messel -Masillosteus kelleri. Unlike species with an elongated snout and sharp teeth, this species probably sucked its food by wide and short mouth and therefore it wasn't a top predator. The greatest mechanical advantage for jaw opening in gars was found here, but the teeth are not arranged in a row, but in broad circles along the jaw. Today we find something similar only in species that feed on organisms with hard shells, with the need to crush them first (using the pharyngeal teeth). In extinct groups, this character occurs in Semionotiformes, which means that Masillosteus can belong to this gar related group (yet unclear position in the phylogeny). Messel in addition to this special representative also revealed a much more typical gar-Atractosteus strausi (recently also Atractosteus kinkelini). This genus has survived until today and is morphologically typical for gars. Specimens from 10 cm to one meter were found. The bright ganoid scales were excellently preserved (instead ganoin dentin), which are known in recent large species to withstand also the small caliber bullets. Today probably the morphologically closest species is Atractosteus spatula, the largest gar living primarily in the Mississippi basin. According to some experts, a detailed look at all fossils found in Messel exhibit many traits that can not be explained as intraspecific plasticity. Maybe we will have more species descriptions, or perhaps even genera, in the future. A lake isolated from other water resources could be perfect for allopatric speciation and then for sympatric inside of it.

Atractosteus strausi
Atractosteus spatula

Masillosteus kelleri is one of the exceptions among gars (if it is really a gar) because of the return to the ecological niche of most taxa within Semionotiformes. So far the only known representative of this group with piscivorous habits is Isanichthys palustris. It is a representative from the late Jurassic found in Thailand. We find here some very interesting characters, such as pit lines with neuromasts for detection of water pressure well-known especially in Holostei. Here they are found in the suborbitals, so the development of very important lateral line was probably present also in Semionotiformes. The presence of sensory pores on the mandible is also discussed in Lepidotes and the study suggests that it may not be homologous with the sensory channels of more advanced groups (mostly blind pores without connection to the main mandibular canal). The discovery of this species led to the hypothesis that Semionotiformes is a monophyletic group with these synapomorphies :series of infraorbitals anteriorly to orbital ring, reduction of ossification in ethmoid region and shoulder girdle up to mesocoracoid, loss of the gular bone. Exclusive character is the first one and it probably originated only here (infraorbitals placed posteriorly to antorbital and they carry sensory channels). Semionotiformes went extinct at the end of the Cretaceous and their onlyrecent relatives are gars (and maybe bowfins, but their relationship to this group is not entirely clear). Due to the absence of their ancient relatives could Ginglymodi diversify and occupy the same niches as their ancestors before them, such example is probably Masillosteus. However, there were many other and more advanced groups of Actinopterygii, which eventually won the competitive battle and gars can be now found only in America.

Isanichthys palustris
Perhaps the most important feature in the evolution of gars are their jaws. Mandibulare has either a strongly elongated shape, or shorter and robust. Dentition usually consists of small teeth on the inner edge of the jaw and massive on the edge. Larger species with more powerful jaws (Atractosteus spatula) have the greatest speed and power in them, mainly due to contraction of muscles and their angle to the bones. Gars have one of the fastest jaws among Actinopterygii, which are important for the hunting of prey based on the rapid explossive exceleration. Some of the extinct species were able to develop even more power than recent ones, because their diet consisted of hard food. The ontogeny is characterised by massive jaw development and a strong allometry compared to other parts of the skull. Great variability is a good guide to gar phylogeny and long snouted forms with elongated jaws are apparently a derived character. In general, species of genus Atractosteus have more mechanical advantage of jaws than genus Lepisosteus. Eocene species Lepisosteus cuneatus and Masillosteus kelleri from Messel with short jaws are more derived than the forms from Cretaceous, which is a sign that multiple lengthening and shortening of snout is characteristic for the evolutionary history of the gars. Similar examples of "evolving backwards" we know in shells of turtles and this phenomenon occurs in a repeated loss and restoration of the same selection pressures in environment. The character that was once in the evolutionary history can arise again in the embryological development by reexpression of existing genes into the active form. Gars from Messel are therefore an important source of data for studying these often complex and problematicly interpretable processes.

Lateral view of the skull of Lepisosteus osseus (A) and Atractosteus spatula (B)
Embryological development of jaws in Atractosteus spatula. A is presenting the stage right after the hatching with ossification only on jaws, mainly on maxilla and Meckel's cartilage. B - Meckel's cartilage is elongating and reaches almost the tip of maxilla. Stage C shows almost completely ossified skull and jaws, just the suspensorium, jaw joint and part of Meckel's cartilago remain cartilagous.

Analyses of sediments from the bottom of Messels ancient lake showed that this ecosystem was quite stable. In deepest and oldest sediments there were no fish coprolites found, which means that right after the creation of lake no vertebrates lived in the crater. The first inhabitans came later, probably because of temporary connection with some near watercourse. Study of food webs is a very important topic and the position of particular organisms in ecosysteme can give us a clue. More consentration should be focused in this direction and we will see animals, like gars, in a completely different way.
