Foto měsíce (Photo of the month)

Srpen 2013

August 2013

August started for me with the hard, but amazing experience. I managed to climb Kilimanjaro (5895 m), the highest mountain of Africa. The photo shows the top behind the giand senecia plants.

Sledujte mě v terénu (Follow me on travels)

Jaká budoucnost čeká africkou divočinu?

Afrika.

What is the future of the African wilderness?

Africa. The black continent, the last true wilderness on Earth. The herds of ungulates comprising of thousands individuals and predators with instincts million years old. Before the dawn of the strongly orange Sun the trumpeting of elephants resounds. Such a picture is beeing sent to the ordinary people in the Western world. The more adventurous is to hear and read about Africa, the more people want to travel there. But is it possible, that it will not have any aftermath? Can the nature in this places still stay such untamed?

There are some places in Africa, which are targets of interest of people all around the world. One of them is reserve called Masai Mara in Kenya, which formes with Serengeti national park a vast complex of savanna ecosystems. The never ending and most popular migration of big animals on Earth takes place here (also the biggest numbers of animals - only the reindeers in the far north can be a competition). About one and half million of wildebeests (Connochaetes taurinus) roam to places more than 1000 km far away to find a food with important nutrients. The herds comprise also from zebras (Equus quagga) and Thompson's gazelles (Gazella thomsonii). The herbivores are followed by big carnivores, which are relatively easy to see here and they are a big lure for nature lovers to visit Africa. There is a high number of documentary movies presenting this area as a big fighting ground, where predator and prey live in a constant battle for survive.

The area of Masai Mara belongs to Masai people. It is one of the best known tribes of Africa and at least some of them still live in the traditional way of life. Unfortunately they also quickly realised, that it is a good way how to earn money and because of this the cultural tours started to be a very commercial issues. I was lucky to meet only some Masai people, who wanted money for a photo. Right on the borders of the reserve indigenous people are trying to sell you their products and souvenirs, which were for me not very original and uncommercial in comparison to those of other tribes. It is important to accept the fact, that this is their land and they have the rights to do also other things, such as burning the grass and keeping their cattle. The coexistence with nature is harmonic - they don't kill wild animals and eat only cattle. Unfortunately, the modern civilization caused, that many Masai people have left the traditional way of life and they also abandon the old rules.

The vision, that the grassy plain in the land of dangerous warriors is a certain bet to see the every-day drama and killing, is not based on the truth. Just the many documentary films are making such a picture. In fact they are born after a hard work in the field lasting months. The predators hunt only when they are hungry and herbivors try to find the best food. Often you have a feeling, that they somehow tolerate each other. Only sometimes there is a dramatic clash - and that is when you have to be in the right place and in right time. The reality is, that even if nothing very dramatic happens (a cheetah or a lion just lies in the grass), animals are surrounded by cars and microbuses and you hear mainly the sound of cameras. The extraordinary moments, when human can spend some time with the wild animal alone, only with the sound of grass moving in the wind, are vanishing.

The most striking example of big disturbance in savanna is the famous crossing of wildebeest on Mara river. On their way to new grazing grounds they have to face a dangerous and stressful action, when they come into the water. But today there is another factor - the numerous cars with tourist, who are waiting for them to start a show. It is a very sad view for a biologist. The herd will never come to the shore when the cars are too close. Then they go back a bit and animals hesitate and stand near the sharp cliff above the river. Finally they deside to go back. Today the wildebeests cross the rivers mainly during the night, when there are no disturbing factors. It is difficult to predict, what will be the influence of growing tourism to savannas in Africa. It is clear, that tourists bring money to reserve, but it should not be a threat for the natural balance. Then it will be very difficult to find the last places in this continent, where the wilderness follows only the natural rules.

Foto měsíce (Photo of the month)

To choose a photograph from the expedition in the Eastern Africa is extremely difficult - I can just pick one which gives me some special feeling. The small group of zebras with the backs of other zebras and wilderbeests in the backround before the end of the day in Masai Mara reminds me of the amazing peace, which gives you the African wilderness... So this one.

Deník zoologa z Madagaskaru (Zoological diary from Madagascar)

Den desátý - chléb každodenní na Madagaskaru

(English version at the end of article)

Navštívili jsme obchod s drahokamy, zkamenělinami a dalšími velice vzácnými přírodninami.

Navzdory všem obtížím jsou výrobky nádherné a nápadité. Nejeden člověk po mém návratu měl z originálních suvenýrů radost... Další rodina nedaleko měla malou výrobnu drobných modelů kol, letadel a dalších dopravních prostředků.

Zdejší muži pracují v prašném a horkém prostředí, a navíc manipulují holýma rukama s roztaveným kovem.

We walked around the centre of Antsirabe, the richest city of Madagascar, in the morning. Our hotel was old and in colonial style. Whole building was full of atmosphere from the time of spa here. There where horses on the main road, sellers of gems and the interesting thing was the alley of plane trees. The most striking object was the monument of dead soldiers, who have fought for the French army in both world wars. I was of course interested in the fauna around the houses and the typical species where the madagascarian kestrel (Falco newtoni) and the madagascarian wagtail (Motacilla flaviventris).

We visited the shops full of gems, fossils and other rare nature objects. Some exemplars were as tall as me. Apart of that there were the radiated tortoises (Geochelone radiata) and the greater vasa parrots (Coracopsis vasa). I definitely didn't like the way they treated the tortoises - they were left on the direct sunlight  and you can get your own opinion from the photo. I was very interested in small gecko lizards from species , which were moving on the walls and flowerpots. You can find them only in a small area of central Madagascar near Antsirabe.

After the visit in the shop we could see the second and much more common part of the island. The first stop was in the manufacture for the souvenirs made from the horns of zebu. All equipment is handmade from the material left on the junkyards and the streets, even the notches on the wheel for working with the horns. Despite the difficulties the resulting objects are beautiful and many people were happy when I gave something from them to them. Next family had the manufacture for production of miniatures of means of transport. Again it resulted from the material found in trashs and junkyards, for example the wheel of little bicycle is made from the infusion tubing.

The most striking example of the poverty on Madagascar came on our way to the tropical eden in the Mantadia national park. We stopped in the city named Ambatolampy, which is known for its manufacture for objects and dishes from aluminium. The men manipulate with the melted metal only with their naked hands and spend whole day in the enviroment full of dust and heat. The price for selling the objects and dishes is very low and not enough to secure the wealthy life for their families. It is a question, if this job is better than no job... In the late evening we arrived to Vakona Lodge near Mantadia national park and the Analamazaotra reserve. I wanted to be prepared for the rich zoological program, so went to sleep early.

Foto měsíce (Photo of the month)

June 2013

I took the photo of June in Velká Fatra mountains in Slovakia. I found a nest of grass snake (Natrix natrix) with about ten young snakes near the big sunlited wood. It was very interesting, that all grass snakes shared their space with a big viper.
