Sledujte mě v terénu (Follow me on travels)

Dorazila globalizace už i sem?

Zde nacházejí jeřábi svou potravu, a nejen oni. Příště už budu vyprávět o čekání v úkrytu a blízkém setkání s majestátním fantomem stepí.

Najít si místo v rákosině a vstřebávat tuhle divočinu, jednu z posledních skutečných v Evropě. Oblast zmapována, snad příští rok!

There are not many areas of pure nature in Europe. The globalization and urbanization is spreading and the last ones are endangered. Hortobágy national park in Hungary is a place for traditional ornithological journeys and one of them was organized by Czech society of ornithology. It was a first observation of this enviroment for me and a preparation for a true expedition in the future. Has the globalization already reached also this place?

Grass plains, pastures, marshes, reeds... these ecosystems are present in Hortobágy national park, which is located near the Tisza river. They are a refuge for many bird species, but this area is also interesting because of the traditional life of local people. Shepherds and farmers use the old methods and keep rare breeds of domestic animals. My expectations were high and about 60 found species of birds were a great result of this survey. Moreover, I found places for the next journey to Hortobágy. Why planning a next journey? Photographing of local treasures is not so easy...

95 % of population of common crane (Grus grus) from eastern Europe head to Hortobágy in autumn. They rest in this area before continuing in their journey to wintering areas in Middle East, Tunisco, Sudan and Ethiopia. They are very shy and it is very hard to come to them closer than to a few hundred meters. Their metallic voice can be heard everywhere and almost 100 000 individuals are creating and amazing spectacle. The flocks are located in various places in a vast country and there are only a few places, where they head in thousands to spend every night. Ponds in Halastó is one of them and it is a home or an area for a short break for many other species. I consider observation of lesser white-fronted goose  (Anser erythropusas valuable, but also species of waders very interesting (look at the species list) and typically nice were the bearded reedlings (Panurus biarmicus). Vast reeds, ponds with various level of water, system of water canals -this area is a trully natural place and zoologist could observate here for days.

Except the water ecosystems there is also a big area of grasslands and agricultural landscape. Here the cranes can find their food, and they are not alone. A stable population of great bustard (Otis tarda) lives here. It is one of the heaviest flying birds on Earth. We found 23 individuals on one place a I was as close as approximately 400 meters, which is a very close distance for this very shy species. It is therefore a next big goal for a future expedition. I am moving slowly throught the dense dry reeds in the outflow depression next to the field, where bustards stand. Every second I am a bt closer to them, the air is shivering. Suddenly a roe jumps out of the reeds a few meters in front of me and I know, that birds have noticed it. They take off on their majestic wings and land in the next field. Next time I will hopefully tell a different story about waiting in shelter for a close encounter with the phantom of grasslands.

I saw only a few individuals of rare hungarian gray cattle, but no wooly sheep or Mangalica pigs. On the contrary, common breeds of cattle and sheeps were everywhere. A different component were the asiatic buffaloes. It seems, that the old traditions are slowly vanishing. The look of the country fortunately still has the historical atmosphere, but the question is, for how long it can survive. The tourist centre is new and modern and you can also find a small museum and a rehabilitation station for injured birds here. Employees of the park are always near the ponds and they check, if you have paid for the entrance. The management is really well functioning here, there are many information boards and watchtowers. So this is the second side of this time full of globalization.

It is nearly 6 p.m. and a majestic spectacle is coming. Mosquitoes are present even at the end of October here and they are all around. And then you can see first flocks of cranes flying above your head. They all head to one place, where they will spend the night. The numbers of them are in thousands and they fill the sky for three-quarters of an hour. Three species of wild geese fly to a different direction, seagulls are abundant and waders, ducks and herons are resting in the driest parts of ponds. For photographing of cranes from small distance you need to find a shelter and wait for them. Find a place in the reeds and absorb the atmosphere of this wilderness, one of the last true in Europe. Area mapped, see you next year!
